Volunteer Information

FDEP’s Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserves staff host “Spoil Island Enhancement Days”, on the 2nd Saturday of every month from October thru April and end with a “Volunteer Appreciation Day” in May. A typical event will include removal of exotic plant species, planting Florida native plants, building/repairing picnic tables, and an island wide cleanup. Upcoming events will be posted on the home page or you can check the schedule of events for times and locations of future events.

Sign-in will begin at 8:00am at the dock. New volunteers can fill out a Volunteer application form in advance to save time at the dock unless you already have one on file with FDEP. Copies of the volunteer application form will be available during the sign-in period. We will start transporting volunteers to the island at 8:30a.m. Volunteers are welcome to meet at the island or ramp in their own boat. After all volunteers arrive on the island, a brief overview of the tasks and allocated responsibilities will be given to the group. Volunteers will be working around chainsaws and herbicide in dense vegetation. Volunteers should wear close-toed shoes, hat, and bring plenty of water. All other field supplies and boat transportation will be provided. The few hours of work can be labor intensive, but all participants will enjoy a free Spoil Island Project T-shirt. Many volunteers enjoy fishing, exploring, and taking in the scenery on the island after the work is completed. Volunteers will arrive back at the boat ramp at approximately 12:30p.m.

If you are interested in participating in a fun and rewarding outdoor experience in your community this season, please send an email with your contact information to the Sign up for Projects page and you will be added to the Enhancement Days distribution list. You can also contact the FDEP Office at (321) 953-5008. Please contact us by the Wednesday before an event so we have enough supplies to accommodate all our volunteers.
